You Don't Know Who You Are Yet

You have been living by an identity built from your worst moments, from what people said about you, and from what life has done to you. None of that is who God says you are. This message is about the gap between the version of you that was shaped by pressure and the version God has been forming since before you were born.

Pastor Ricardo Zaal · Fountain of Grace International, Pretoria North · 3 May 2026

Most people carry an identity they never chose. It was handed to them by the family they grew up in, the school they attended, the relationship that broke them, or the failure they could not recover from. They have been living as a reduced version of themselves ever since - not because they are broken, but because nobody ever showed them the real picture.

The Bible shows a consistent pattern: God addresses people by who they are becoming, not who they currently appear to be. He did it with Gideon. He did it with Abraham. He did it with Simon Peter. He is doing it with you. The statement is not "you are not who you think you are." It is stronger than that: you have not seen yourself yet.

1

You Have Been Living Someone Else's Definition of You

Romans 12:2

The world around you has been working to define you since the day you were born. Parents, teachers, failure, rejection, and your own worst moments all contributed a version of who you are. But Romans 12:2 says, "be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind." Conformed means shaped by external pressure. Most people's identity was formed under pressure, not by revelation. The real you is not the version that pressure produced.

2

God Speaks to Who You Are Becoming

Judges 6:12

Gideon was hiding in a winepress - afraid, small, convinced his family was the weakest in Manasseh and that he was the least in his father's house. The angel showed up and said, "The Lord is with thee, thou mighty man of valour." Not who Gideon thought he was. Not who his circumstances said he was. The angel spoke to the identity God had already placed in him that had not yet been activated. This is how God speaks. He names your destiny before you have lived it.

3

Your Past Is Not Your Identity

2 Corinthians 5:17

"Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new." The word translated "new" in the Greek is kainos - it means a new kind, a new quality, something that did not exist before. God is not trying to improve the old version of you. He is creating a new one. The reason you keep dragging your past into your future is that no one told you the transaction was complete. In Christ, you are not a repaired version of who you were. You are a different person.

4

You Are Not Done Yet

Philippians 1:6

"Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ." The phrase "will perform it" means He will carry it through to completion. The work God started in you has a finishing date - and it is not today. What you see in yourself right now is an incomplete picture. The version of you that emerges from the process God is running in your life is not the version you are looking at in the mirror this morning. You have not seen yourself yet.

"God named Abram as father of nations before he had a single child. He speaks to the finished version of you while you are still in process."

- Pastor Ricardo Zaal

How to Start Living From the Right Identity

Identity is not changed by trying harder. It is changed by what you consistently believe. Three steps that shift identity from the inside:

  1. Stop agreeing with the old report. Every time you say "I am just like this" or "I always do that," you are signing off on a false identity. Romans 12:2 says transformation comes by renewing your mind - that starts with what you stop accepting as true.
  2. Find what God says and speak it. The same way Gideon had to accept "mighty man of valour" before he became one, you have to receive what God says about you before it shows up in your behavior. Search the Word for what it calls you as a child of God. Declare it.
  3. Trust the process, not the current picture. Philippians 1:6 - the work is not finished. What you see in yourself today is incomplete. God is not done. The right response to an unfinished process is not frustration. It is patience and cooperation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do I feel like I have no real sense of who I am?

Most people's sense of identity was formed by their environment, the words spoken over them, failures, and how others treated them. None of those are reliable. When identity is built on performance or approval, it keeps shifting. The Bible teaches that true identity is rooted in what God says about you - not what your history says.

What does the Bible say about identity?

Scripture consistently shows God addressing people by who they are becoming, not who they currently appear to be. Gideon was hiding when the angel called him "mighty man of valour." Abram had no children when God named him father of many nations. God sees the finished version of you and speaks to that version while you are still in process.

How do I discover who God says I am?

Romans 12:2 says transformation comes by renewing your mind. Start by finding what the Bible says about you as a child of God, declare it out loud, and stop agreeing with the accusations of the enemy or the limitations of your past. Identity is rebuilt by what you repeatedly hear and believe.

What does "you don't know who you are yet" mean?

It means you are not the finished product. What you have experienced, failed at, and what people called you - none of that is the final word. Philippians 1:6 says He who began a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ. The version of you God started is still being completed. You have not seen your full self yet.

Anytime, whenever somebody comes to a meeting like this, they expect something to happen. They expect God to move in their lives. Because I still don't think anybody would really go to church and just think, I am in church, I'm done. And everybody wants something that needs to be changed. And this message today is literally for those who woke up this morning, but they aren't sure of who they are. This message is literally for anybody who tried so many different things, yet it has not been working. And this message is literally for somebody who is carrying an identity that somebody else gave him. And I want to take the time and speak to this specific person. I understand. One thing that I can say is, I know you're not lazy. You are a hard worker. And you've been really, you can almost say, putting the metal to the pedal, the pedal to the metal. You moved. And yet, your life is not moving anywhere. This is who the message is. And I must say, it's a lot of times where things just happen differently or something else. You have been measuring yourself with other people and figured it out who you are. You said, I just need to find myself. This is who the message is for. This is who the message is for. Now, I have entitled my message. You don't know who you are yet. And I want to give you five things that Jesus did, who he was. So, and I've started in a series of messages. And the main title of this series of messages will be, He Moved. And this is the first sermon of that. It might take a week. It might take three weeks. It might take five weeks. It might take even a year. But this forms part of our year of action. Because our, our theme for this year is the year of, that is our theme for this year. And so, if you fit in some way. Now, I mean, you've been letting down by so many people. You can almost say the definition that they have of you, what they thought you would become. And these things that I can say to you is labels that they put you under. Labels, what I mean by that is that, when you were born, somebody called you a name that labeled you ever since then. Somebody said a word that made you feel like, this is me, how I become. But that identity meant to come from other people. That identity comes from your parents, your bosses, even the people around you, surrounding you. But they're not authorized to put a label on you. You know, you know, I remember some years ago when when my, my, my sister was about, let's call it grade 8, grade 10 or somewhere around there and my mom and dad used to say this one is is becoming a problem because every time, whenever you you hear, she is she is is fine. What's up? What's up? I don't know. It's just the one that's the first. Yeah. Okay. Wow. Okay. Yeah. Thank you. That's right. Come on. Let's get on. She is standing. You know. What? No. Yeah. But it's fine. It's fine. It's actually in the center. Yeah. Thank you. So when you you were going through all this you actually handed over control of your life to anyone with an opinion. You look if they say you you just become anybody in will tell you some way or the other somebody had a name for you to a liter somebody had a name for you I mean give you a name that you know you are not and I'm making a joke out of it but how did you even come to to a liter as a two liter but somebody if I look at it when I grow older or when I grow up all my friends called me well and I'm I'm I know for my head my ears were too big but as I grow older the ear thing becomes less of a problem because of my or let me let me say my head grown to become more like my ears but I accepted it and knew I had big ears so I left it at that so whenever some I didn't feel like it's an insult I felt like yes I have so it's fine so other people did your identity through what they are saying about you and some of these things literally happen so I want to encourage you today that whenever something is true accept but whenever something is not true reject it because you have let somebody identity of you tell you who you want to become and I I'm looking at Michael Jackson for argument sake Michael Jackson was such a you hear I use the word was because he's no longer and one of the things that I don't understand is that how come somebody such a beautiful feature change his whole face because of somebody that told him otherwise and he started believing now I'm looking at at life yes you right you right but how do you pluck what is it called yeah surgeries now my question to you is when somebody don't know who they are they start becoming tell them to be let me let me read the bible let me let me not be let's let's go to matthew 3 verse 17 now matthew 3 verse 17 says the following and lo a voice from heaven saying beloved son in whom I pleased isn't it nice that god tells you who you are because when god tells who you are you are not chasing identity instead you receiving it when somebody chase to be a millionaire it's almost as if the moment you become a millionaire now you chase to be a billionaire so you keep on changing the goal post can I say that we are but when god has been given you you are my anointed one nothing changes can you see that so you using a wrong measuring stick the whole time and that is why when you chase the identity with the wrong measurement stick that you have you you you you become some it's better to receive it rather it's better that when he calls you by name not by title or achievement by name that is what you have to accept you are a kingdom you know you know when when it says that you are the apple of God's eye just picture the apple of God's eye let's let's let's picture that if if God is the apple of if you are God's the apple of God's eye picture this thing close to your eye the moment it comes closer it close your eyes will close automatically even if you try and open it it's forcing it to close it imagine if you touch somebody who's God's the apple of God's eye how God will protect you let us read Isaiah 43 verse 1 Isaiah 43 verse 1 says but now thus saith the Lord that created thee O Jacob that formed thee O Israel fear not for I have redeemed thee I have called thee by thy name thou art mine isn't it nice thou art mine God is saying he is you are his that is when you when you receive it not you have chased for it or you have worked for it you you you you received it somebody like me who is in so many times having difficulties it's literally hard to understand it's really I sometimes I sometimes wonder if I go into a let's call it a I'm trying to let's say board meeting let's call it a board meeting so when you go into the board meeting and the moment the CEOs and higher up ranking people start talking and you are just a mere person do you know sometimes you feel inferior and don't give your ideas because of you feeling very inferior that sometimes kill who you are because of thinking that they have better ideas than you because they sit in the CEO side who you are God has been giving you ideas but when the ideas is almost sit at the back foot of who you are when you are surrounded by other people that becomes a problem I remember when I was I grew up my mom told me a story she said my name was intended to be Roderick but when I was born the name did not sit right for some weird reason and the register they registered because they said my mom for some weird reason told them Ricardo but my mom never said Ricardo they just probably couldn't hear that's what my mom said yeah I am today Ricardo instead of Roderick but the worst part of it is that as I grew do you know nobody called me Ricardo they all called me Ricardo were all the other names and for years whenever somebody used the name Ricardo it felt like they were talking to somebody else it's like they talking to no but it's not yet me my question to you is for how many years are you living inside an identity that somebody else gave you for how long how many years have been you've been doing that an identity that somebody else gave you you can almost say it never quite fit yourself and yet your stare is still carrying it and tell you one thing there chasing identity instead of receiving it sometimes makes you to make decisions wrongly I paid a 70,000 rent to a Tony Robbins coaching session that I thought would make me feel better or would like literally yelled me at that time I genuinely believe that it could could keep me or give me some right systems from somebody who already figured it out but I didn't the coaching did help me thank you to my coach coach Lucas he was really helping me with so many you can almost say apology if if I can all the things that me I'm still you today I went for never happened and I mean you've been building a life on an identity that was never yours it's like almost as if it is the definition that they've given to you never been yours and I want to take this time and say to you please understand Jesus did not come for the expected place he did not ask the Nazareth permission he showed up he showed up if you go to John 1 verse 46 he says and Nathaniel said unto him can there any come out of Nazareth and Philip said unto him come and see come and see it's almost like as if he can if Philip knew regardless of whatever title you put on me it's different one one of the things that you need to understand that how you start in life it's not a destination it's how you finish to go to a destination that is how you work in life and you might ask what I mean that somebody used to call you big fit whatever the case may be when you are younger and I know a lot of people especially the more fit type of people that when they were younger they were so chubby but when you're looking at them today tall and skinny and yet they still call them fatty or parky or duckers or whatever the case may be and yet today they are fatty or duckie and one of the things that I can tell you I grew up and when I was in Newtown the place we stayed in I literally thought that that place was our own all I know is that the one side of the house was a brick house and then my room was like a zinc type of a zinc type of a place and I thought it was our own house but yet as I grew up it was actually Mr. Majid house the house never owned the house so when we moved to Pozdin where we stayed that is where I realized it's actually the house that was under mom's and dad's name this is the things that you are going through but now I want to take the time and change now from the problems that you've been going through what would be the way forward what would be the way forward the way forward is better this way it's best this way described there people always say that God will give you something and he will provide for that something I'm making an example if God gives you a bigger house he will give you the provision as well so all you have to do is just step into that house you know what I mean let me make an example there was a time when I there was a time when I was I was younger and I waited for my biological father to come and save me that is what I thought would happen because in a place where I was living I felt like an outsider with my dad that used to hit me so much my dad myself I used to fight a lot of it's it's almost like the way we fought so much is that dad will never come and find me my dad will never even move come close to my side so what I did is I went to go and actually look for my father if I didn't go and look for my father I would have been waited a long time so that the solution for things is to show up not just wait and let things happen to you don't just wait things happen to you tell you that you need to receive the identity that was spoken over you and if that was not if you go to Matthew 3 the father said my son he didn't say I think he is my son my son so that you are the beloved son of Christ you are the beloved son of Christ it's like there's a there's an old song I think that some years ago before the world began you were right every tear you cried was precious in his eyes but because of his great love he gave his son and everything was done so you would come so he prepared everything for you and you said what is been given to you what you you must receive that you must receive it do you know that when somebody comes to the Lord now it does not happen automatically that you now become the son of God you need to do something to become you need to to receive it is deliberately receiving it and that's why where your identity in Christ come it doesn't happen automatic because the years that you've been in the world God let's say not let's not say God for the years that you've been in the world people put some name tags on you even the devil gave you some name tags and all those name tags today when you're looking back at it has changed when you receive Christ as your Lord and Savior I hope this makes sense I mean when my family died in the year 2010 I didn't die with them I said I'm a child of God and yet I'm still standing the year 2000 the 10th of February I gave my heart to the Lord and ever since then I have deliberately changed how I was let me ask you do you know me as a woman hitter do I hit woman have you ever seen me beaten up your mother or have you heard your mother ask questions like last night you hit me you have not heard those things girlfriend that I had before that's not before your mother before your mother I was abusing them now my question to you is was that just a change that I did or was that something that over time to get rid of it because when I received the Lord as my Savior it was a deliberate reception of God but it was not an automatic move the things of God I had to work for it another solution is that you you need to publicly announce things you know when you publicly announce things like God announced Jesus as my beloved son publicly obviously because of that Jesus had to move according to the tag if I can say it was placed upon him he had to move according to the tag that was placed upon him so I want you to really say it out loud to somebody that I would become a doctor one day and when you do that have an accountability to that and just remember that whenever you look at Jesus you are his you are Jesus your identity is in Christ you are the son of Christ let that settle for minutes if you read in first John three verse one it says behold that manner of love that the father had bestowed that we should be called the son of God therefore the world know it us not because it knew him out not there's something that you should understand there that a son does not earn the right to a father's house a son takes it as it's his son doesn't work hard for what the father have a son get it easily the unfortunate part is that any child of mine got my stubbornness already they took it up without asking for it it's been given and all three of them is like yeah next not me the other one no you have been given what I have you look like me although you look more like your mother but still you look like me that's a given you don't have to fight for it I know you are beautiful them sorry but I need you to understand that you need whose you are because the moment you know that you are a son of God you know you know that Christ is your Lord and Savior everything else and I want you to know there's something that is that don't restart every time when somebody tells you something different about yourself it's not a reset button if I can call it that way don't restart your whole identity surrounding somebody's opinion about you because this is what happened at school the moment somebody say something to you you you change your whole identity as if you like that mommy just answer that school now you come and are you ugly if you are yes thank you you can accept it but nobody is ugly matthew 3 verse 15 and jesus answered answering said unto him suffer it to be so for thus it become it us to fulfill all righteousness then he suffered him this is like a short answer a clear answer can you hear and jesus answering and said unto him suffer it to be so now for thus it becomes us to fulfill all righteousness with him he was not rude he wasn't arrogant he just acknowledged john's perspective and moved forward and he moved forward anyway so whenever somebody says to you something no wait let's read the prior verse that's verse 14 let me start from 10 and now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees which bring it not food for good fruit is hewn down and cast into the fire indeed baptize you with water I mean I indeed baptize you with water but he that cometh after me he that cometh after me is mightier than I whose shoes I'm not worthy to bear he shall be baptized you with the holy ghost and with fire those I mean whose fin is in his hand and he will thoroughly purge his floor and gather his wheat into the garner but he will burn up the chuff with unquenchable fire then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John to be baptized of him but John forbade him have need to be baptized of thee and cometh thou to me John who feel at that moment he's not worthy to baptize Jesus and said unto him suffer it not suffer it to be so now for thus it become us to fulfill all righteousness then he suffered him the honor or the order sorry the order he acknowledged John perspective that John think he's bigger than him yet he just moved forward to baptize a lot of times somebody will challenge your identity somebody will challenge your identity I'm telling you they will always challenge your identity some some will even argument with you for why they you should stay the same I'm just saying hear them yes you listen to them acknowledge what but then move forward don't stay on that don't stay on that he walked from Galilee to the Jordan he stepped into the waters in front of witnesses and he did not wait for the heavens to open he moved and the confirmation came afterwards so when he moved he moved knowing I don't care what people are saying and God confirmed I want you to take a moment and identify one public act of obedience that you have been responding I am not talking about the plan I am not talking about prayers that you prayed before something that you can act on do it this week something that you can act on do it this week so if you have been living within somebody else's definition of you today is that day where it needs to change somebody's identity of you is not your own identity move away from that receive what God says about you receive what God says about you and refuse what others said literally you're not lost you're literally not too far behind you are actually ahead of many you you he's you don't have to do a lot to become his he said all you have to do is believe once you believe and receive that's it believe and receive what are you going to do about that today what are you going to do about that and believe it and that I want to take this opportunity and say to you it is it is something that I can I can guarantee you what the moment you understand that's the moment you understand yourself the moment you understand the Bible that's the moment you start understanding yourself because everything is in the Bible yet we don't read enough on the Bible to understand what it means to understand and I leave it at this today asking you please don't let somebody opinion calls you in being somebody's opinion is not yours what you say about yourself is what heavenly father for far too long we've been under somebody's impression we've heard the lies they spoke about us we heard how they said who we are for far too long but what the enemy is saying about us we only believe what you say we are any identity that has not been we refuse it now in the mighty name of jesus christ our lord and savior and we only accept who you say we are in jesus my name amen and amen now may the grace of our lord jesus christ the love of god and the sweet fellowship of the holy spirit rest and abide with us all until jesus comes surely goodness and mercy shall follow us all the days of our lives and we shall glenn forever and ever in jesus mighty lord you
