Dying Right - What Jesus Did on the Cross That Most People Miss

Most people see Good Friday as a tragedy. It was not. Every word Jesus spoke from the cross was deliberate. He was not reacting to what was happening to Him - He was completing what He came to do. This message looks at what it means to face an ending the right way.

Pastor Ricardo Zaal · Fountain of Grace International, Pretoria North · 3 April 2026

There is a right way and a wrong way to face an ending. The wrong way is to be dragged into it - bitter, confused, demanding answers from God about why it happened. The right way is what Jesus modelled: walking into it with intention, speaking with purpose, and releasing your spirit into the Father's hands rather than gripping your own life so tightly it bruises.

Good Friday is the most important day in human history - not because a good man died, but because the right man died, in the right way, for the right reason. And everything He said in those final hours was a message to you.

1

He Was Not a Victim - He Was a Volunteer

John 10:17-18

Jesus said, "I lay down my life, that I might take it again. No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself." The crucifixion was not a tragedy that happened to Jesus. It was a mission He walked into with full knowledge of what was coming. The difference between dying and dying right is whether you chose what you are giving your life for. Jesus had already decided. That is why He could be silent before Pilate, calm in Gethsemane, and deliberate in every word from the cross.

2

"Father, Forgive Them" - Dying Without Bitterness

Luke 23:34

The first thing Jesus said from the cross was a prayer for the people killing Him. Before He dealt with His own pain, He dealt with their guilt. Dying with bitterness in your heart is dying wrong. Whatever season is ending in your life - whatever person contributed to that ending - your first instinct may be accusation. Jesus chose intercession instead. What you say at your lowest moment reveals what you actually believe about God.

3

"It Is Finished" - Not Over, But Complete

John 19:30

Tetelestai. The Greek word stamped on paid debts. When Jesus said "It is finished," He was not collapsing in defeat - He was declaring a transaction complete. Everything sin owed, everything the law demanded, every judgment that stood against you - paid. The cross is not the end of the story. It is the fulfilment of everything that came before it. Good Friday is not about mourning a death. It is about receiving what that death purchased.

4

"Into Thy Hands I Commend My Spirit" - Dying in Trust

Luke 23:46 / Psalm 31:5

Jesus' last words were a quotation of Psalm 31:5. A Psalm every Jewish child was taught to pray before sleeping. At the moment of His greatest agony, Jesus reached for a childhood prayer. That is what the Word does in you - it becomes your language when you have no words left. To commend your spirit to the Father is to release your life into His hands rather than gripping it yourself. The hardest version of trust is the one that happens when you cannot see what comes next.

"Tetelestai - paid in full. That word is not the end of the story. It is the proof that the story worked."

- Pastor Ricardo Zaal

What Good Friday Changes for You

Good Friday is not a day for guilt. Guilt says you owe something. The cross says the debt is paid. Three things the death of Jesus changes for you right now:

  1. Your past has no legal claim on you. The debt was stamped tetelestai. Stop paying what has already been settled.
  2. Your endings are not final. Friday looked like the end. Sunday proved it was a transition. Whatever is dying in your life right now - God has not abandoned the story.
  3. Your access to the Father is open. Matthew 27:51 - the temple veil was torn from top to bottom the moment Jesus died. The barrier between you and God was removed. You no longer need a priest, a good track record, or a cleaned-up life. The way in is open.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does it mean to die right according to the Bible?

To die right means to face an ending with purpose and surrender rather than bitterness and panic. Jesus is the model - He spoke seven deliberate statements from the cross, forgave His accusers, provided for His mother, and declared it finished. Nothing about His death was reactive. Dying right is choosing what your ending says about what you believed.

Why is Good Friday important if the resurrection is what matters?

You cannot have Easter Sunday without Good Friday. The resurrection has no power unless the death was real, complete, and accepted. Hebrews 9:22 says without the shedding of blood there is no remission. Good Friday is where the full price was paid. Sunday proves it worked - but Friday is where the work was done.

What did Jesus mean when He said "It is finished"?

The Greek word is tetelestai - used in commerce to mean "paid in full." Merchants would stamp a debt with tetelestai when the account was settled. When Jesus said it, He declared that every debt owed by sin to God's justice was paid completely. Not partially. Not on credit. Finished. That word is the foundation of everything the New Testament says about forgiveness, healing, and access to God.

How do I face painful endings in my own life?

The same way Jesus faced His: with honesty, with trust in the Father, and with a bigger picture in view. When something ends in your life that you did not ask for - a relationship, a job, a season - the question is not only "why did this happen?" but "what is this completing?" Dying right means refusing to let the ending write the final word.

To be here, not in this place emotionally, not caring this much, not even feeling this alone, because remember, a time like this, although you are surrounded with a lot of people, loneliness is a bit of a tricky one, but you are here now, and somehow you sit in this message, so watching this message will be something that I can tell you, a dying man got it right. A dying man got it right, while most people still living today are still figuring it out. And for some weird reason, it's like almost if you are in the middle of feelings, like you have mixed emotions of things, but you feel like as if you are breaking down. I want you to understand that this message is specifically for you. It's like you are like a car that everybody can see. Oh, this car looks nice from outside. They want to buy the car, but from inside, it's breaking down. It's like you've been holding on to something as if you are saying, if I can just hold on for one minute, it will be so nice, but it's eating you from inside. This is, you know, like you, you, you, when you go to through life, you earn a lot of medals for you've been doing a lot of things. But it's like this moment, you feel there's a, there's some, something missing in your life. If this is you, I want to take the moment and say this message is for you. Now, I also at the same time want to make you aware, somebody says that there's some seven words that were said on the cross. They, they don't say it, seven words. They say it, you can almost say seven statements that has been made. But today, I want to tell you, it is a part of redemption. And I want to, I will tell you why I'm saying it's a part of redemption. Let me, let me, let me start off by reading. Let's, let me read Isaiah 53 for you. I think it, it will just make sense. What did I say? Isaiah, no? No, what, what am I thinking, Zechariah? Isaiah 53. If you go to Isaiah 53 and reading the verse five, I think let's start from four. No, three. Let's, let's, let's do it three. He is despised and rejected of men, a man of sorrow, acquainted with grief. And we hid, as it were, our faces from him. He was despised and we esteemed him not. Surely he had borne our griefs and carried our sorrow. Yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God and afflicted. But he was wounded for our transgression and he was bruised for our iniquities and chastisement. And chastisement of our peace was upon him. And with his stripes, we are healed. And with his stripes, we are healed. I want to give you this seven statements or the path to redemption. Now let me explain to you why this weekend happened. For those of you who don't have a background of why we celebrate this weekend or why we get holiday if you see it like that. You know, some of us think it's the holiday. So why do we get this holiday? It's in remembrance of Christ. Now, the whole story started during the course of this week, where Jesus, like on Sunday, I told you, Jesus came to Jerusalem, you know, Jesus came to Jerusalem and people were relating him, you know, like the the king of the Jews is here, you know, like Hosanna, Hosanna, Hosanna. And they thought Jesus will redeem them that moment. That is what happened on the Sunday before. And because it didn't happen what they expected, how it should be happened or how it should have happened. They conquered now, you know, like what you call those things, you know, conniving. They conniving and actually get him to be sold. He was sold for 30 sickle silver. Then when he was sold, they brought him in front of his Pontius Pilatus, I think, of where they asked a question that here is somebody and here is Jesus. Who would you want to be you can almost say killed? and the people didn't choose Jesus at the time. They choose Banabas. It's Banabas. What is my mind? Where's my mind today? Banabas. They choose Banabas. Banabas. And the thing that Banabas said, or the thing that he knew, he knew he was at fault. He knew he is more deserving to die because of the things he did. He wants more. But do you know that it was not about Banabas having all the sin, having all the wrongdoings. It's about somebody who doesn't do anything wrong yet take our wrongdoings upon himself. that is why they chose him. They taught the killing him. They taught that for him because when they asked or that when they were singing Hosanna, they taught at that time that Hosanna, which means save us now. Wow. For that save us now, he didn't save us. So let's rather choose him to go now because he didn't do what we expected him to do. You see, so when, when that happened, it even made them more angrier to say, we choose Jesus to be hanged. When he hanged, it was on a Friday like this. And that is why when he was on the cross, he said the seven things. And I will give it to you in order and I will explain to you at the end. I want you to, is it necessary to go to the Bible? Okay, let's, let's just go to the Bible. I don't want us to, to take too much time, but let's do it anyway. If you can go to Luke for me. And we read Luke 23. I'm starting with the first one. I forgot to check if this thing is, is life because I didn't, today I didn't prepare everything together because I thought, I thought I'll do it now, now. You know that where you want to do it now, then you ended up not doing it. Oh yeah, we are life, yeah, we're life. Yes, we're life. Okay, cool. Got that. So the seven things that I want us to go through, starting from Luke 23, and I want us to, to, to read from 34. Let me, let me, let me start from 32, just to give you a background now. 32, and there was also two other male factors led with him to be put to death. To be put to death. And then, and when they were come to the place, which is called Calvary, there they crucified him. And the male factors, male factors, one on the right and one, the other on the left. Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do. That was the first word. Now, imagine for somebody, knowing he has been wronged. Saying the wording, Father, forgive them. Why would somebody that is like, literally supposed to be angry, rather saying, forgive them? This is, this is where Jesus showed you revenge is not an option. He actually showed you forgiveness is the first thing that must come. So even if you heard the wordings that were said, the first thing that comes from his mouth, whilst in such pain, is not kill them. It's not, Lord, strike them by lightning. Lord, take away their lives as they are about to take away mine. No revenge. Not even an accusation. Lord, can you see they are wrong? Nothing. For somebody knowing that he's, he has not done anything, yet he chose to forgive. How many of us get into a place where we feel that we've been wronged? And do you know what we do? We start, hey, let me not say, but we start fighting. He didn't even take up any defense, no defense, nothing. But the teaching behind this is that whenever you get into a place where you've been wronged, the first thing that you know, this is a revelatory design for you, is that you cannot go deeper with God while holding on to people. You cannot go further with God while holding on to unforgiveness. You cannot move forward if you have not forgiven. The prayer was actually said, before you go do this, go back to your brother and sister and first ask them for forgiveness. Isn't it? Those are the scriptures. Now, my question to you is, what is it that you're still holding on, thinking that you want to go ahead with God, you want to go forward with God, but yet forgiveness is not yet there? Look, I'm not going to go into in-depth. One day, I will make it a teaching of each and every one of it. But that teaching is not today. I just want you to get a broader perspective of a day like today. Number one is to get forgiveness first. Ask for forgiveness first. Because if you have forgiven, the number two part will become easier for you. This is the second word. Luke 23, verse 43. Now, when you go, it went on, it went on, it went on. I'm not going to give the whole description how the soldiers mocked him. I'm not going to give you all that thing. How they even wrote, this is the king of the Jews. I'm moving on to the second one, which says in 43, and Jesus says unto him, verily I say unto thee, today shalt thou be with me in paradise. For somebody who has been living his whole life wrong, never even bothered, you know, you know, picture this, you love your whole life, killing people, stealing, doing anything that goes against God's word. but the, the day when you are about to go, your, your only words that you say, put you into heaven. And these words is, where it says, remember me, when thou comest into thy kingdom. Huh? Knowing that I am worthy to be killed. The guy on the other side is worthy to be killed. But for the guy in the middle, how can they be killing him? He knew. Picture this. For somebody who has not been knowing Jesus, nor did he know God, but yet believed. While the other one was mocking, he believed. The same cross. The same cross. But different outcomes for two people. The one who believed was told to be, verily, I say unto thee, today shalt thou be with me in paradise. This is the number two statement, a salvation that comes with immediate effect. No waiting upon judgment day. It happened immediately. So, one thing you should understand is that God, there is no time because if you put God into time, he would have died long time ago. Huh? Bishop, Methuselah is God. How can you put God under the same anointing of Methuselah? Is he not the oldest knowing person alive? Now you want to tell God, today you are one year old. You can't. A thousand years is like one day. One day is like a thousand years. So, where do you see the infinite God telling him that salvation is somehow going to come tomorrow? Salvation is a thing that happens within quick time. It's a, it's just the response that you need to give. I believe you God. Do the belief you'll be safe. No process, no, not going through the bishop. There's this thing that we do after somebody gives his life. what is that verbal thing we call it that you say, I believe in Christ that he is the, he's resurrected. He died on the cross for us. What is that thing? Sinner's confession. No sinner's confession. This guy didn't even have a sinner's confession, but yet instant move of God. And yet here you are still waiting man of God on the sinner's confession to, to show to this guy that he is now it doesn't need a sinner's confession. By God's word, it's gone. No waiting period. No, no religious systems that we always used to have. Just your faith. Number three, you have to have a responsibility in the middle of pain. You have to have a responsibility. Now let me explain what I mean by the responsibility. If you go to John, the book of John, let us not go and greet John now. I'm saying the book of John. John is not in the service today, so sorry man. Don't go to John. I said the book of John and read verse 19. I mean chapter 19 verse 26. Now chapter 19 verse 26 says the following. And when Jesus therefore saw his mother and the disciples standing by whom he loved, listen to this, whom he as Jesus loved, he said unto his mother, woman, behold thy son. He said, woman, behold thy son. Then said he to the disciples, behold thy mother. and and from that hour, the dead disciples took her unto his own home. Now one thing I want to make mention here, somebody dying on the cross, who is about to go, but has a responsibility to his mother, has a responsibility to the disciple, has something that he says, but still he thinks of others. What kind of redeemer is this? What kind of man is this, that think about others first before him, whilst he's in pain? Sometimes you don't understand the significance of a day like this. Huh? Picture this. For somebody who is about to die, first thinking of others, that is wow. Imagine it's like somebody dying on a plane saying, no, take this oxygen mask. While the instruction specifically was, make sure you use the mask first. Hmm? while Jesus is losing his breath, he gave to his mother and the disciple the oxygen mask. Oh, isn't that wow? Isn't that wow? Before he could die, he established relationships. Do you know why he did it? because he knew he would come back. He knew he would come back because for somebody who is about to die, knowing he's going to die, thinking of others first. Something that you should know. you shown maturity. Like, can I explain? It's like, maturity, you shown maturity while you are in pain. It's more matured to look out for others than to look for yourself. I can almost ask you this question. When you suffer or when you are in pain, do you drop your responsibilities? Do you drop your responsibilities? let's go to the next one. The next one, number four, is separation. What did I say? Separation there. And I want us to go to Matthew 27. Matthew 27, verse 46. It's called separation. And about the ninth hour, Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, Ellie, Ellie, Lama Sabachthani. This is to say, my God, my God, why has thou forsaken me? In your hour of pain, in your hour of hurt, in your hour of dying, feeling separated from God. This is actually where it shifts. where the physical pain is literally outweighing the spiritual weight. Imagine somebody getting in so much pain, who knows the who knows the he was the one that says me and my father are one. Do you remember that? He said, me and my father are one. But here he says, my God, my God, why has thou forsaken me? There's a reason for him to be forsaken. It's for you not to be forsaken. he gets forsaken so that you not get the same. Remember he said me and my father are one. But here he used the words not father. He says my God. Can you see if you see your father as a father, why that when you are in pain suddenly it's my God? The reason for that is he became separated so that you don't have to be separated. He became where he was one with the father. He became separated with the father so that you must not be separated from the father. so that you must not be separated from the father. The next one which is John 19 also verse 28 the number five. I want you to I want you to hear the wording here. He says I thirst so it shows even though he is of a higher calling or of a higher being being separated from God showing his humanity that's number five. It's actually you can say it exposed his humanity it exposed how human he was because when he says I thirst in John 19 verse 28 after this Jesus know that all things were not accomplished that the scripture might be fulfilled say it I thirst now can you hear that is where the body starts speaking the body starts speaking weakness the body starts speaking dryness the body starts speaking limitation so that you must not be weak you must not be dry you must not be limited that is why he thirsted thirst for you not to be having thirst he at that time he didn't act human he was human there was no acting needed when you are thirsty you are thirsty huh that was the fifth one did I say yeah five number six I'm sorry I'm rushing but I wanna I wanna make sure that we we get the broader picture of everything what would you like to search for huh check check check if that thing is on so number six he says it is finished huh John 19 verse 30 he says it is finished no no no he didn't say I am finished hear the wording it is finished what is that one wait man what is that okay no let me not be Greek or Hebrew is Greek now that let's die that let's die that's what I was looking for is a Greek word meaning it's finished famously spoken by Jesus on the cross young so when he say it is finished he didn't say I am finished remember one thing there when somebody say I am finished it means the person is finished but when you say it is finished it means that this is actually not a defeat moment it's a victory moment you see when you are defeated you would say I am the one that is finished but when you are not defeated you say it is finished meaning to say that there is still something coming out of me can you see there is still something coming out of me I am not yet finished but it is finished this is what we call number six completion the completion it's like you can almost call it a transactional language the debt has been paid the assignment has been completed the project is done the whole system is fulfilled the work is done but yet can I tell you something some people still trying to earn from what was already being fulfilled through your good works you still trying to show God I want to be with you in paradise one day through this thing I want to you run every kind of scheme just to show him that you are for him although he already paid the price for you you still want to pay another price but you know there's something that we don't understand is that I keep on mentioning the Exodus 14 14 that he will fight for you but here when it says it is finished it means that he fought and he won and what the victory over death you don't have to fight death it's been victor over English we won the death I don't know what they say death where is your statement huh that is finished that but one thing I can tell you it did not stop there you went on to the last one which is a great sign of surrendering to learn from huh I need you to know this is a great sign of surrendering to let you know this comes in Luke 23 verse 46 where he says father into thy hands I commend my spirit huh it's like he ended where he started did you hear that because where did he started remember the number one is forgiveness father forgive them and then he ended again with the father saying father into thy hands I command my spirit so when he started with the father father forgive them he ended with the father so your life should be having this kind of sandwich whatever happens acknowledge him first whatever happens acknowledge him first because through this what was broken in the middle has been restored at the end what was broken in the middle has been restored at the end so let me let me give you the path I was talking about the path starts as follow number one is to forgive first then salvation will come and when salvation comes there's a relationship that you have to have which the relationship was where he said about his mother and the sons did you hear that part he says mother here is thy son so there's a relationship but yet when separation comes I should I should actually putting this into a manual type of a thing like so that you can understand what I'm saying so whenever you get into any situation first forgive the person then it's almost like give them salvation through your forgiveness and once you say I'm sorry I've done you wrong you get salvation you built a relationship on that person although when hard times comes you will find that there would be a separation a separation from the pain that you're going through and the people that you sometimes think they will be there for you huh do you know that there's sometimes things that you thought I thought that this one will be here for me but they were nowhere to be found that's where the separation of God and God and Jesus comes where instead of calling him the father he called him God so when you get into that kind of deeper pain you have to show that you are human being that's where it comes in when he says I thirst so the path will be forgiveness salvation relationship separation then showing your humanity after that only you will realize that completion can only come to show that you have been a human being and when the human completion the completion comes still you have to surrender to God this is not random this is not random this is a part of redemption so when you forgive you will receive salvation when you have received salvation you will enter into a relationship with God into a relationship with man and when the relationship is proven when you feel the moments that feel like God is distant you confront your humanity you confront your humanity you confront you as a human being then you understand that the work has been finished and you learn how to surrender now the question is if you are looking in the sequence how we went through it where do you find yourself at this moment do you find yourself that you have to forgive do you find yourself that you need to receive salvation do you want to enter into a relationship or is it that you face a moment and this moment feels like God is too far from you it's like God you said you stick closer than a brother but why today you feel so far and sometimes we have to tell him we are human beings so where are you or are you done to go back to surrender again I want to take this moment and open up the floor to say if you have heard this message and you feel that you are a you are the one that this message has been speaking to that you need God or you need Jesus as your Lord and Savior because it will be unfair for me to have all this message and not ask anybody who want to give their life to Jesus if it is you you may raise your hand or you may type in the comments if you are online wherever you are and somebody will reach out to you do you want to type on the comments and say I would like to take up Jesus as my Lord and Savior you can type in the comments and somebody will get to you if it is you that you feel like you moved far away from God it's like you you know God you have given your life to him but for some weird reason you feel so distant from him that you started actually making that distance to be more and more and more if you feel like you are that person you can also say in the comment I am that one that when I put my hand on the plow I went back you can lift your hands and say I feel I need to come back to God where there was a separation I need him to take me back so that he can complete what he has started in me so that the completion can be done if that is you you can even in the comments type and say it is me and I want to pray for you heavenly father if there is somebody that gave their life to you today whether I've seen it or not for somebody who is still going to listen to it or not anybody touch their lives now take away their sin as you said you will do it you will take their sin as far as the east is from the west and you will clean it as white as snow cleanse them now as white as snow anything they have done wrong I ask you to forgive them now the mighty name of Christ and the pussy that felt like you went too far take them now by their hand for the God and finish what you have started already knowing that you have not finished your yet you have shown to them that they need you in whatever they do pray now in the mighty name of Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior amen and amen I also want to take this moment and say the church has come to a place where we are we are about to do more than just the normal service we do there are certain things that we do outside the service which is training Bishop you and did you get the documents for the training that I have sent please just go through that training as well so these are the type of training that we still need to do there's an entrepreneurship training that I still need us to get into as well so I'm just giving you the reason why we take up an offering is for this to happen and I'm just talking about the training now but I'm not even talking about us giving out to the poor because the Bible say we have to look after the poor we have to look after the widow so if there's a widow that the husband has left nothing for the widow we still have to go there as well I know that there was a funeral done a week or two ago and we haven't even went to go and give the potato and you know those things that they use for the funeral we actually didn't go there is because of the reason was that we couldn't get hold of the organizer of the funeral but we are still trying to get hold of the organizer of the funeral so that the kids of this woman can still have something that they can eat you understand and and so these are the things that that is happening although we don't tell you all the time we are going there this is the person's name we are we're not supposed to tell you actually we're just supposed to tell you somebody got something again and show you the slip because some people don't want to lift up their hands and say you know today I'm hungry there's no bread in the house because of the afraid of judgment because the church will say you know last week we went to sister Jonas house and sister Jonas and the kids we gave them grocery now sister Jonas sit there ashamed they will not ask the church for anything again because you make them look bad so that is the reason why we use the money that we are asking it's not for me I got a salary as well I got paid by my employer I don't ask for money in the church for buying electricity in the house for me or buying food for me no I used the money for what God has asked me to use it for is to help others then what we use the money for is also the discipleship training you know like the papir man what they call the things the paperwork works and you take the money and make copies man you understand what I do the book work or the book and what not ever yeah let's call it the those kind of things the English is not English in me so that is what we are using the money for if you are online and you would like to so there is also our website that you can go to which is fountain grace it's not fountain of grace it's fountain grace so it's www.fountain grace dot org and you can go and give there's different ways to give also online if you want to partner with an NPO we are NPO registered as well on the social development side we are registered and when you do donate on the NPO side we only use it for what the NPO ask us that we must use the money for so it's not for pastor salary please don't don't get me wrong I'm just telling you already or for pastor's car to drive somewhere no it's not for anybody it is for what it is said to do and I think that's it but before I go I just want us to pray for the gift thing thank you heavenly father for those givers thank you heavenly father for those sowers actually because you said you give seed to the sower and bread to the eater so we want to say thank you for those sowers that sows into this ministry I want to speak a blessing over their lives father god let the heavens open on into their lives so that whatever they give will not just be multiplied but will be so sanctified that anytime whenever they put into this ministry it will be used for the correct things number one and it will be coming back to them in such a multiplication side that they will not have room to keep it for the god so that they can see like a real person pressed down shaken together run over that was thrown into their bosom for the god in the mighty name of jesus christ our lord and savior just before you come and give i want to share the grace first then we can come and give now may the grace of our lord jesus christ the love of god and the sweet fellowship of the holy spirit rest and abide with us all until jesus comes surely goodness and mercy shall follow us all the days of our lives and we shall dwell in the house of the lord forever and ever in jesus mighty name we pray amen and amen
